The big question

Taylor and Chloe have been talking a lot about when Tanner and Coby were in my tummy. And today Taylor said "Mom who's tummy was I in?" Just curious how other adoptive moms answer this question. What do you think is an appropriate answer for a 3 year old?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Because of Linlee's autism, I have no idea when I'll get this question, but I suspect we're still several years away. However... I had prepared by buying several children's adoption books to read with her and had planned on being honest whenever the question did come up. I believe if you act as if it's just a normal part of life, kids accept it like that. I'd go ahead and tell Taylor that she was in another mommy's tummy; a mommy who lived in Vietnam. Then just answer the questions as they come (that one answer might be enough for her right now), but keep answers short and sweet. That's my two cents, anyway.

We bought Lydia a book called Over the Moon and it explains adoption to a child really well. She knows (as best as a 3 year old can) that she grew like a flower in a special ladies belly. It goes into how she came their daughter a bit more. Really good book. It is still a bit hard for her to understand why babies grow in my sisters belly but in my heart (as we say). She is starting to understand a little more each day as we talk about Kai and how we went through the same steps to bring her home.

I think the honest approach sounds good but I would say she grew in a special lady's tummy rather than another "Mommy's."
